We build granny flats too!
What is a granny flat and what are the new granny flat guidelines likely to be?
A granny flat is essentially a small self contained house.
Here are some of the latest proposed requirements which are due to come into force early 2026:
The net floor area must be 70 square metres or less.
The building must be single story and have a maximum height of 4 metres above the floor level.
The building must be 2 metres or more away from any other structure or legal boundary.Â
Must comply with the building code and have all work done by licensed tradespeople
This is great news for tiny housers who have access to land, as it means you will be able to legally have a tiny house built without going through the full consent process, and you won't need to have your tiny house on wheels if you don't want to.
